Deontic logic is the logic that deals with actual as well as ideal behavior of systems. In this paper, we survey a number of applications of deontic logic in computer science that have arisen in the eighties, and give a systematic framework in which these applications can be classified.

These expressions may be termed deontic words, and sentences involving them deontic sentences. 2 A deontic sentence is a truth of deontic logic if it is true and remains true for all variations of its non-logical and non-deontic words (that is, expressions which are not logical or deontic words).

Deontic logic has been strongly influenced by ideas in modal logic. Analogies with alethic modal notions and deontic notions were noticed as far back as the fourteenth century, where we might say that the rudiments of modern deontic logic began (Knuuttila 1981).

Several years ago I came across a marvelous little paper in which Hector-Neri Castaneda shows that standard versions of act utilitarian l ism are formally incoherent. I was intrigued by his argument. It had long seemed to me that I had a firm grasp on act utilitarianism. Indeed, it had often seemed to me that it was the clearest and most attractive of normative theories.

Meanwhile there were also attempts to reduce deontic logic to alethic modal logic (Anderson, (Anderson, 1958)), and from the 80s also a reduction to dynamic logic was proposed (Meyer, 1988) 6, giving rise to the subfield of dynamic deontic logics. This brings to the fore another important issue in deontic logic, viz. that of ought-to-be versus ought-to-do propositions.

In this thesis, the main focus is on deontic logic as a tool for formal representation of moral reasoning in natural language.
